  1. It's just called faith! Maybe you should get in a program like "Alcoholics Victorious", which is a Christian rehab program. I'm sure that they would use the bible as one of their tools for recovery. At least I know here in Beaverton, Oregon, the Foursquare Church has a program like that and people just meet every week and it sounds a lot more personable than AA. AA started out as a Christian group, but now they talk about a "higher power" so that people of other faiths won't feel left out. I've been in bible study groups from time to time, and even now I pray for people when there's a need, and God is real and he does answer prayers. I'll bet if you started praying to him and explaining that you want to believe in him, He would help you with your faith.
I just remembered the other group besides AA....it's Alanon. Well, I believe that my son, Jimmy, is in heaven with God. It would be sad to believe that this is the only life we have, when heaven is for all eternity. Our life on this earth is pretty short, so there has to be something more than this. God Bless!

  2. Cynthia, There's absolutely nothing wrong with asking questions! God has even said, "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." I, like you, was very skeptical of "religion." I didn't have a real problem believing in God per se, because there's just too much order in the universe and even in our sinful world for there not to be an intelligent Creator. If God could be completely understood, He wouldn't be God, but He has given us a lot of evidence upon which to base an intelligent decision about Him, and He doesn't mind if we express our doubts. In fact, the more I reasoned with Him, the sillier my doubts seemed to be.

As for Jesus, what better way for God to reveal Himself to us then to be "made flesh" so He could dwell "among us" (John 1:14)? Prophecies of the Old Testament foretold His coming, and His-story tells us He came just as the prophecies foretold, and in the midst of Daniel's seventieth week, He, as the second Adam, took upon Himself the guilt of all our sins and suffered the death that we all deserve, so that we could receive the life that was His. With His stripes, we are healed!

I look forward to dialoging with you concerning your doubts. If there's any specific question you'd like me to help you with, I'll be glad to try.

    Blessings,
    Jack
